Abdominoplasty vs Liposuction

There is a great deal of confusion among patients interested in cosmetic surgery when it comes to a “full abdominoplasty”, and “mini abdominoplasty” or simply liposuction. True each can remove fat and create a slimmer waistline, but each comes with its own advantages, disadvantages and price tag. Determining which procedure will help you achieve your cosmetic and aesthetic goals will ultimately be between you and the plastic surgeon you choose. However, here is a brief description of each to help curb some of the confusion surrounding these cosmetic procedures.

Full Abdominoplasty

A full abdominoplasty, also known as a “tummy tuck” is a form of reconstruction surgery and is reserved for patients who require quite a bit of reconstruction to their abdominal area and underlying muscles; mid-sections that have been stretched due to weight gain and subsequent loss or child birth.

Your plastic surgeon will create an incision from the top of one hip bone, down along your bikini line and up over the other hip bone. By doing this, he can access underlying abdominal muscles in order to surgically strengthen and tighten them creating a firmer and slimmer waistline. He then removes all excess skin and repositions your belly button. Liposuction can also be administered to remove excess fat deposits. Mini Abdominoplasty

The mini abdominoplasty, or “mini tummy tuck” is much more popular with those patients suffering from slightly sagging or poochy bellies, or those with stretch marks who are not over weight. These patients maintain diet and exercise, however they can't seem to strengthen and flatten the bellies.

Like the full tummy tuck, the mini tummy tuck also requires an incision, however it is much smaller and your plastic surgeon will not address the underlying abdominal muscles. Instead he will make a low incision, approximately 5 to 7 inches long focusing on your lower abdomen. He is then able to pull down and remove any excess or damaged skin leaving you with the flatter belly you desire. In some cases he will also administer liposuction, but it isn't always the case with candidates for this type of procedure.

The benefits to having a mini tummy tuck versus the full tummy tuck are that it costs several thousands of dollars less and there is significantly less recovery time.

Liposuction

Liposuction is quickly gaining in popularity for those patients seeking a smaller and flatter waistline. Ideal candidates are those who maintain a proper exercise and diet regime, but just can't seem to get rid of “love handles” or their “pooch”.

The only incisions made by your plastic surgeon are the tiny openings to allow the liposuction cannula (or wand) to go through. The heat from the cannula does tighten the skin a little bit ultimately leaving the patient with a smooth and firm mid-section.

The benefit to liposuction over the full abdominoplasty and mini abdominoplasty is definitely its cost difference and its recovery time with most patients back on their feet within a few days. As with any cosmetic surgery, you should discuss your goals, budget and potential risks with the plastic surgeon you choose.
