Tummy Tuck Plano
It is not until we begin to approach the warm months of summer that people begin to take a look at their bodies and wonder when they should schedule a tummy tuck in preparation for bikini weather. A tummy tuck surgery, medically known as abdominoplasty, is a reconstructive cosmetic surgery performed by a skilled Plano plastic surgeon to tighten underlying abdominal muscles, remove fat and excess, flabby and stretch-marked skin leaving the patient with a firmer, flatter waistline.
Though more commonly chosen by women whose midsections have been ravaged by the after affects of child birth, men too, are seeking firmer and smaller waistlines.
Of course, you will discuss all your goals and concerns with your Plano plastic surgeon during your initial consultation, but there are also a few things you should know prior to having a tummy tuck that will ensure good health and long-lasting results, as the healing time for the procedure is substantial:
Weight loss – it is important to keep in mind that a tummy tuck is not designed for weight loss. Yes, some fat and extra skin will be removed, but for optimum results you should be within 10% of your goal weight prior to surgery.
Liposuction – Your Plano plastic surgeon may or may not perform liposuction during your tummy tuck procedure as a means to remove excess fat from areas around your abdomen. He or she will make very small incisions in which to insert the liposuction cannula (or wand). It works great in combination with the tummy tuck procedure as the heat from the cannula has a slight skin-tightening affect as well.
Incision – the incision your plastic surgeon will need to make is quite extensive and can catch people off guard if it was not explained properly prior to having a tummy tuck procedure. Your Plano doctor will begin making the elliptical-shaped incision at the top of one hip bone, down along your pubic line then back up over the other hip, making a sort of crooked smile shape. He will also make an incision around your belly button for proper placement after the procedure is complete. The ultimate goal is to have any scarring concealed within your bikini line.
Stomach muscles – there is a connective tissue that covers the abdominal muscles called fascia. It is the fascia that acts like a girdle and holds your internal organs in place. When this connective tissue gets stretched out due to childbirth or excessive weight gain your organs push against this abdominal wall causing your belly to protrude. During your Plano tummy tuck surgery, your plastic surgeon will address this area by suturing this inner girdle into a more firm, taut position.
Surgery length – a traditional or full tummy tuck takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to perform. It is commonly performed at a hospital or medical clinic where a patient can expect to stay for at least one night, possibly two. Since you will be administered general anesthesia, the overnight stay is for precautionary reasons.
Drains – drains or shunts are placed around the midsection to keep excess fluids from pooling causing infection or other problems. They must remain in place for several weeks after your tummy tuck procedure.
Compression garments – in addition to the drains, you must also wear compression garments for several weeks. These tight fitting garments help keep the area stabilized and assist in proper healing.
Recovery period – The first week following a tummy tuck operation requires strict bed rest. The patient is then allowed to move around and perform some small tasks that do not require much exertion. There will be quite a bit of tenderness and pain in the first few weeks so your plastic surgeon will prescribe medication for pain relief. Most of the swelling and bruising will go away within 5 to 7 weeks and you should be allowed to resume more normal activities. Most people report full results after 3 to 4 months.
