Tummy Tuck San Diego

Abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck) is a cosmetic procedure commonly performed in the San Diego marketplace. Since the tummy tuck surgery lasts approximately two to five hours, it is generally performed under general anesthesia.

A tummy tuck usually starts with a relatively long incision in the abdomen, from one hip bone to the other. The incision is shaped like a smile, with a flat bottom that runs along the bikini line. The flat side of the smile occurs on the lower abdomen just above the pubic area. The sides of “the smile” make a small curve along the pelvis to the top of the hipbone. A second incision is made around the navel to free the abdominal tissue for proper belly button placement after the tummy tuck is complete.

Once the incision has been made, the plastic surgeon separates the skin from the abdominal wall to the ribs, exposing the vertical abdominal muscles (rectus muscles). These muscles usually have been stretched apart by previous pregnancies or simply loosened due to age. The rectus muscles are then stitched into a new position, both tightening the muscles and reducing the waist. After the muscles have been repositioned and tightened, excess skin is stretched down and removed.

The remaining skin is covered with the abdominal area and sutured in place. The navel is then brought out through the skin covering to its new location.

Preparation for Tummy Tuck Surgery

The first step towards obtaining a new, flatter stomach is a consultation with a certified plastic surgeon in your local San Diego marketplace. This evaluation will determine if you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck.

The plastic surgeon will take a complete medical history. He or she will review all the medications you are taking, if you have allergies or have had previous surgeries or pregnancies. The surgeon will also perform a physical examination to measure the degree of excess fat and loose skin in your abdominal region.

He or she will also assess the state of your abdominal muscles and skin tone while standing and lying down. The surgeon will probably take some "before" pictures during this consultation process. It is during your initial consultation that all questions regarding the procedure and expectations for outcome will be discussed.

Once it is determined that you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck, your doctor will set up your surgery date and will give you a list of pre-operative instructions. This will probably include some laboratory tests, routine blood tests and a complete cardiac work-up if there is any history of heart disease.

In the two weeks before your tummy tuck, your plastic surgeon will ask you to stop taking certain medications such as aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and anticoagulants, which can increase the risk of bleeding.

Some herbal remedies can also increase the risk of bleeding. The fact that a product or preparation is "completely natural" does not mean it is safe. For example, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, green tea and gingko biloba can increase bleeding during and after a tummy tuck surgery.

Be sure to tell your surgeon about anything you are taking. But never stop taking any medication suddenly without first talking to your doctor.

Your plastic surgeon may also suggest that adding certain medications to your daily regimen in the days and weeks leading up to the tummy tuck procedure such as 500 mg of vitamin C every day.

Pre-op instructions will also include a list of do's and don'ts of eating and drinking before a tummy tuck procedure.

Most surgeons recommend that prospective patients to quit smoking during the previous month and the month after the tummy tuck. Smoking can cause delayed wound healing and skin necrosis (which is when the skin becomes infected and dies).

Liposuction San Diego

The basic procedure for liposuction involves making a small incision in the area where fat is to be removed and inserting a small tube called a cannula. The cannula is pushed and penetrates through the layer of fat to separate it from connecting tissue, so it can be suctioned. A vacuum pump or a large syringe is used for the extraction of fat. If liposuction is being performed in multiple areas, a new incision is then made and the procedure repeated until complete.

During the many years that liposuction has been performed, there have been some technique changes. A technique commonly used by plastic surgeons is called tumescent liposuction. It involves injecting a medicated solution into fatty areas before the fat removal process. The fluid contains a salt solution, lidocaine (a local anesthetic) and epinephrine. (Epinephrine is a drug that constricts blood vessels and has been shown to reduce blood loss from liposuction procedures.) One of the advantages to this fluid injection is that there is less bruising after surgery, another is that local anesthesia is widely regarded as the safest form of anesthesia.

The tumescent liposuction technique involves large amounts of fluid, usually 3 times more fluid than fat to be removed. This method takes longer than traditional liposuction to complete, especially if there is more than one injection site. (It is typically 4 or 5 hours for tumescent liposuction versus 1 or 2 hours for liposuction without the fluid injection.)

One of the newest technological advances with liposuction is with the assistance of Ultrasound-Lipoplasty (UAL). A special cannula that produces ultrasonic energy is used to break down fat cell walls and liquefies the fat. The traditional suction is then used for fat removal. This procedure is the longest with regards to procedure time and is used in high precision situations. Liposuction San Diego

Cosmetic Plastic Surgery San Diego

Cosmetic plastic surgery is a surgery that specializes in improving the physical appearance of the face or body. This can include things such as changing the shape of the nose, removal of facial wrinkles, correction of protruding ears, breasts augmentation or breast reduction, or remove excess fat in areas such as the stomach or thighs.

Cosmetic plastic surgery is also used to correct congenital deformities such as cleft palate or other birth defects. It can be done to correct physical deformities that are caused by illness or accident. The cosmetic surgeon you choose concentrates on a particular surgical area and to make the patient look better. This is why it is called "cosmetic", as it is to improve physical appearance.

Cosmetic plastic surgery is almost always a "choice" of surgery, which means it is something a person does not necessarily has to have, but has decided for personal reasons. This does not mean, however, that cosmetic plastic surgery is just about vanity. Often a person has a physical attribute that causes him or her lots of mental anguish, as in the case of excess male breast tissue or when someone has a physical attribute that is so abnormal that causes him or her to avoid social situations together.

Sometimes a particular physical attribute may cause a person to develop real physical problems, as in the case of women whose breasts are so large that they develop back problems. In this case, although the condition is not life threatening, the correction of the condition of reduction of breast surgery can improve the patient's quality of life.

In recent years the field of cosmetic plastic surgery has seen a lot of interesting developments. Laser cosmetic plastic surgery, has replaced "going under the knife" in many cases, face lifts are often done now without cutting the skin, greatly reducing scarring. These developments are welcomed, as less invasive cosmetic plastic surgery means fewer anesthetics used and a reduction of infection after surgery. Hospital stays can also be reduced or excluded altogether. Plastic Surgery San Diego
