Tummy Tuck Warren, NJ

Abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck) is a cosmetic surgery procedure routinely performed in the Warren New Jersey marketplace. Since the tummy tuck cosmetic surgery lasts approximately 3 to 6 hours, it is performed under general anesthesia.

About the tummy tuck procedure

A tummy tuck begins with a long incision across the abdomen, from the top of one hip bone to the other. The incision is shaped like a crooked smile, with a flat bottom that runs along the pubic line. The flat side of the smile occurs on the lower abdomen just under the bikini area. The sides of “the smile” make a small curve along the pelvis to the top of each hipbone. A second incision is also made around the belly button to free the abdominal tissue for proper navel placement after the abdominoplasty is finished.

Once the incision has been made, your Warren New Jersey plastic surgeon separates the skin from the abdominal wall to the ribs, exposing the vertical abdominal muscles (rectus muscles). These muscles have typically been stretched apart by pregnancies and extreme weight loss or simply loosened due to age. The rectus muscles are then stitched into a new position, both firming the muscles and reducing the waist line. After the muscles have been repositioned and tightened, excess and damaged skin is stretched down to cover the abdominal area and removed. The remaining skin is sutured in place and the belly button is then brought out through the skin covering to its new location.

Preparation for Abdominal Surgery

The first step towards obtaining a firmer, flatter stomach is a consultation with a certified plastic surgeon in your local Warren New Jersey marketplace. This evaluation will determine if will be a successful candidate for abdominoplasty.

Your plastic surgeon should take your complete medical history. He or she will review all the medications you are currently taking (prescribed, over-the-counter or herbal), and whether you have certain allergies or have had previous surgeries or pregnancies. Your cosmetic surgeon will also perform a physical examination to measure the degree of excess fat and loose skin in your tummy region.

He or she should also assess the condition of your abdominal muscles and skin tone while standing and lying down. Your Warren New Jersey cosmetic surgeon will likely take some "before" photographs during this initial consultation. It is during your initial consultation that all concerns and goals regarding the tummy tuck procedure will be discussed.

Are you a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

Once it is determined that you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck, your cosmetic surgeon will arrange your surgery date and will give you a list of instructions to follow prior to surgery. Depending on your age and medical history, these instructions may include some laboratory tests, routine blood tests and a complete cardiac work-up, especially if there is history of heart disease in your family.

In the weeks prior to your tummy tuck, your Warren New Jersey plastic surgeon will ask you to stop taking certain medications such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and anticoagulants, which can all increase the risk of bleeding.

Be sure to tell your cosmetic surgeon about anything you are taking. But never stop taking any medication suddenly without first talking to your doctor.

Your Warren New Jersey plastic surgeon may also recommend that adding certain medications in the days and weeks leading up to the tummy tuck procedure such as 500 mg of vitamin C every day.

Pre-operative instructions will also include a list of do's and don'ts with regards to eating and drinking before abdominoplasty.

Most cosmetic surgeons recommend that prospective patients quit smoking during the month before and the month after the abdominoplasty. Smoking can cause problems with healing and skin necrosis (which is when the skin becomes infected and dies).
